Political Unrest in Thailand
It has not been heavily publicised but you may know that a state of emergency was declared for Bangkok on September 2nd due to the blockading of the Prime Ministers office by anti government demonstrators.
We have been monitoring several government websites and news outlets since the news broke and will continue to do so. As of Monday 8th September the advice from these sources has not changed and is to exercise caution when in Bangkok, avoid demonstrations and the area around the PM's office. We are also in contact with the venue who advise us that because of the distance from the hotel to the trouble spot which is the other side of town, they do not anticipate any issues with the event.
We are planning to go ahead with the event as scheduled on the 16th and 17th of this month and we will continue to monitor these sources and other local contacts to ensure that the situation in Bangkok remains safe for our guests and our own staff. If the situation changes we will post more information here and also email all registered participants.
Bangkok, Thailand
The city of Bangkok, known in Thai as Krung Thep or "City of Angels", is the capital of Thailand, founded in 1782 by King Rama I. Bangkok is the country's principal gateway and port. Lying a mere 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the sea, the city sprawls 1500 square kilometres (58 square miles) on both sides of Thailand's main river, the Chao Phraya.
Visa Information
Visa and travel information for Thailand can be found at the website of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs at http://www.mfa.go.th/. Any foreigner needs a visa to enter Thailand, however, nationals of 11 countries can enter without obtaining a prior visa if their stay does not exceed 30 days. A list of these countries can also be found on the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. If you do need to obtain a visa prior to travelling to Thailand, the following information may be helpful:
- Please check the requirements for a visa (if you need a letter of invitation please see below), and submit it as soon as possible. A visa is valid for three months from the date of issue.
- Normal processing times for visas are two business days if the application is submitted in person, and one week plus mailing time if the application is submitted by mail.
- For locations, websites and contact information of many Thai Embassies and Consulates go to www.thaiembassy.org. Residents of countries without a Thai Embassy or Consulate should refer to the Thai Embassy or Consulate in their nearest country.
- Additional documents may be required, for example, a letter of invitation. Halldale Media is happy to send you one if you send a request to apats@halldale.com with your full name, address, organizational affiliation, fax number with dialing codes, and full passport details (nationality, passport number, place and date of issue, expiration date).
