The Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University, in partnership with Latitude Aviation English Services, has won an Accelerating Business Collaboration award to research spoken English for successful flight training. Latitude has also unveiled a new course in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Led by Professor Tineke Brunfaut and Dr. Olena Rossi and funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council, the research will focus on data generated from Latitude’s Checkpoint web-based assessment of English language proficiency for student selection and admission along with analysis of flight training courseware and interviews with flight instructors. Latitude will use the knowledge exchange to support the refinement of the speaking component of Checkpoint to bring enhanced measures of spoken language proficiency to its customers.

Latitude has announced further news: its rater and test developer training it now available online as a 40-hour course in the assessment of aviation English in accordance with the ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements (LPRs).

Designed for the initial and recurrent training of LPR raters and for anyone involved with the selection or development of aviation language tests, the course provides training on aviation language assessment with reference to ICAO document 9835, literature in the field of language testing and current industry guidance on best practice.

Delivered as a blend of self-access e-learning and Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) sessions taught by experts in the field, the course comprises eight modules which analyse and define the ICAO rating scale and holistic descriptors, explore the ICAO Rated Speech Samples Training Aid and evaluate the usefulness of a variety of aviation English speaking test tasks and more.
