Indian MoD Promulgates Framework for Increased Use of Military Simulators

India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced a new policy framework aimed at enhancing the use of simulation-based training across the Indian armed forces and Coast Guard.

The new policy seeks to drive greater levels of indigenisation in the production, deployment and maintenance of the military simulators for the Indian armed forces.

“The overarching vision is to transform to simulation-based training across all military domains for combatants, leaders, maintainers, administrators, life science experts, procurement and financial agencies and thus achieve cost effective, efficient, safe, fast-paced and smart training,” an MoD release stated.

The MoD is to release a detailed action plan assigning responsibilities to all its constituents and industry partners to explore greater use of simulators within the military and Coast Guard. The new framework will be used to factor in combined requirements for simulators during the procurement process.

The MoD framework will aid the armed forces in factoring their requirement for simulators at the planning stage of procurement and create capability plans to cater for phased induction of simulators, with the eventual goal of reducing live equipment utilisation for training.

The new policy will be applicable to all types of simulators currently in use or slated for procurement for India’s armed forces.
