After six years of research and development, Virtuasim launched new training products to support its Pilot Integrated Training (PIT) concept at the 2017 European Aviation Training Symposium in Berlin. The solutions consist of fully virtual (Vsim_PIT) or hybrid (Vsim_HYB) training offerings using Oculus Rift hardware. To reduce complexity, Virtuasim has replaced the traditional joystick with a LEAP motion tracker on the front of the headset, which allows the student to see their hand in the cockpit and simulates a natural interaction with the controls. Both use a 3D cockpit with access to all relevant manuals to present theoretical content in the sequence established by the checklist rather than as isolated blocks of learning. Furthermore, pilots are trained as crews, not individuals, allowing for the introduction of crew coordination philosophies from step one of training. According to Virtuasim, the integration of theory (ground school) and practice (CPT) improves a student’s learning curve by increasing CPT time by 80% while simultaneously reducing training time and costs by 20% because specific CPT slots are rendered unnecessary. As part of Virtuasim’s offering, a Learning Data Recorder & Analyzer (LDRA) records all actions performed by crews and provides analytics on trainees’ theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge on topics such as scan flows and fault resolution. With this data, Virtuasim says training departments can verify whether pilots are ready to make use of expensive slots in a full flight simulator. Virtuasim says a low cost of ownership and rapid return on investment are differentiators compared to other solutions. The Oculus Rift head mounted device (HMD) has a small footprint and weight (230g) and connects to an OEM notebook or desktop. A single HMD can display all the client’s aircraft and associated content, eliminating the need for multiple training devices. The company confirmed its new products were well received at EATS and it is now working on RFQs regarding the fully virtual solution (Vsim_PIT) for both Boeing 737NG and Airbus A320 aircraft. It says launch customers will see a 6-8 month lead time while content is customised, but as Virtuasim develops the solution for new aircraft, the re-usability of content will reduce this to a 4-5 month lead time.
