On Feb. 15 officials with State Fair Community College and Bothwell Regional Health Center signed an agreement to partner on a simulation collaboration project that will enhance nursing education and nursing practices for both organizations.
In June 2016, representatives from SFCC and BRHC began to develop the simulation collaboration idea to bridge a gap between education and workplace practices for nurses. Using SFCC’s four high-fidelity patient simulators, nursing students and BRHC nurses will work through realistic simulation scenarios developed by the project leadership team comprised of college and health center staff. Student nurses will develop needed skills and build confidence while BHRC nurses enhance their patient care proficiencies.
The purpose of the simulation collaboration project is to develop a plan built on evidence-based practice that meets the objectives of student nurses and staff nurses as well as strengthens the relationship between nursing education and nursing practice.
“SFCC has had a tremendous partnership with Bothwell Regional Health Center since the 1970s,” said SFCC President Joanna Anderson. “We are grateful to BRHC for enthusiastic leadership, providing clinical preceptors and supporting activities such as mock interviews and health and career fairs. Now, we’re excited about this new method of learning that will benefit our students and practicing nurses as well as strengthen our relationship with the hospital.”
BRHC will appoint a facilitator to work with SFCC’s nursing informatics coordinator to organize simulation activities, develop objectives and evaluation tools for training scenarios developed by the project leadership team.
“Our overall goal has always been to improve health care in our community,” said Rose McMullin, BRHC chief nursing officer. “We want to enhance the experience of the students as well as the existing BRHC staff by providing realistic health care interventions. The end result will make both the students and BRHC staff stronger clinically.”
