The Johnson & Johnson Institute has 24 state-of-the-art training facilities, located in 23 cities on five continents. And when it’s not possible for healthcare professionals (HCPs) to travel to the institute, it can deliver education via an 18-wheeler mobile lab equipped with the latest in surgical simulation training. The customized approach allows surgeons, fellows, residents, physician assistants and nurses to participate in a team-learning environment.

“For many of our customers it is not feasible to attend a J&J Institute program at one of our sites because of travel costs or time away from work,” said Dawn Lane, professional education manager. “Bringing the training and education directly to our customers eliminates these barriers and allows us to deliver education and training on the safe and effective use of company products, designed with the objective of improving patient outcomes."

The J&J Institute Mobile Lab uses cadaveric specimens to teach orthopaedic trauma, joint reconstruction, spine, sports and CMF procedures in a setting that simulates the OR. Participants gain hands-on experience with the instrumentation and techniques used in these procedures. The mobile institute is fully customizable to the needs of the attending HCPs. It can be configured to conduct a bioskills workshop for residents or train advanced surgeons on the latest innovative techniques.

David Teague, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with Oklahoma University Medical Center took part in the Oklahoma City tour. “We had our 30 residents participate in a training session that gave them exposure to the techniques and instrumentation in a simulated OR environment,” said Dr. Teague. “It was a very worthwhile training experience that we were able to have all our residents take part in because we did not have to incur travel costs or time away from the hospital.”

Through the physical locations, online classes and numerous collaborations, the Institute is working to increase access to quality professional education to improve outcomes, increase patient satisfaction and reduce costs in a value-based healthcare environment.

“In Texas, for example, we were able to provide customized training in five areas of the state where there has been a need for this type of education,” said Karen Gonzalez, J&J professional education manager. “The mobile labs allowed us to deliver this learning to HCPs in an efficient, effective manner.”

In 2018, the J&J Mobile Lab visited a total of 23 cities across the U.S, including stops in Charleston, SC, Austin, TX and Portland, Oregon. “In total, the tour trained more than 455 HCPs who might not otherwise have been able to attend a J&J Institute educational program,” said Kevin Kryger, Professional Education Manager. “It’s an example of our commitment to providing anytime, anywhere educational opportunities to the surgical community.”
