OMS founders recognized for contribution to diabetes training

Oxford Medical Simulation (OMS) was invited to Number 10Downing Street in recognition of its work to improve care for people withdiabetes. The NHS England diabetes team are working with Oxford MedicalSimulation to train doctors using virtual reality (VR). Using VR headsets,doctors can now practice in simulated medical emergencies, learning from theirvirtual mistakes to improve care for patients in the real world.

The event at Downing Street was organized by the PrimeMinister to acknowledge the contribution of organizations and individuals todiabetes care.

OMS Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jack Pottle, said: “Using cutting-edge virtual reality technology we are enabling healthcare professionals to learn from their mistakes without harming patients. Recognition from Number 10 further drives us in our mission to optimize clinical performance, reduce the cost of training and benefit patients globally.”

The OMS virtual reality system is in use across the U.K.,Europe and North America. The diabetes scenarios, authored with clinicalexpertise from the NHS and input from patients, are being used in amulti-center trial across the South of England.
