Study on Further Development of Standards for Federated Simulation

The Connected Forces Initiative (CFI) is a key enabler in developing the goal of NATO Forces 2020. CFI aims to enhance the high level of interconnectedness and interoperability Allied forces have achieved on operations and with partners. CFI combines a comprehensive education, training, exercise and evaluation programme with the use of cutting-edge technology to ensure that Allied forces remain prepared to engage cooperatively in the future.

Full in line with this initiative, the NATO Modelling and Simulation Group (NMSG) started MSG-163 dedicated to the 'Evolution of NATO Standards for Federated Simulation'. Interoperability between NATO and partner states has become increasingly important as threats from all sides intensify. Simulation systems that are mutually interoperable provide an essential support for education, training and exercises. In addition, open tools that support the integration of simulation into federations, that verify the conformity of standard specifications, and that assess and certify interoperability are beneficial in the preparation of exercises and experiments.

The Integration Verification and Certification Tool (IVCT) developed by MSG-163 will deliver a new release of the certification process and tool (IVCT) and a new release of the NATO Education Training Network Federation Object Model (NETN FOM) and the associated Federation Architecture and FOM Design (FAFD) introduced by MSG-134.
