The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) approved the construction of 17 baffle firing ranges at military facilities throughout the country. The $34.6 million worth of baffle ranges will be developed in Indian Army military stations, cantonments and training establishments.
Baffle firing ranges are covered shooting training areas that prevent possible accidents due to stray bullet injuries -- and include ground barriers, side walls and baffle walls that block misdirected bullets. The new baffle ranges can facilitate firing from 300 to 500 meters and will add to the 60 similar firing ranges that exist throughout the country.
Seven of the new ranges will go to the Southern Command, three to the Eastern Command, two to the Northern Command and one each to the South Western and Central Commands. The one at Central Command is proposed for the Officers Training Academy in Gaya, Bihar.
