The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) will soon have its own training academy, with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) recently having taken over 158 acres for the purpose. The new training academy will now come up in the coastal city of Mangaluru, located in the southern Indian state of Karnataka and is slated to be operational by 2022-23.
In addition to providing training for ICG personnel, it will also accommodate Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and other Government maritime and security agencies; in addition to providing personnel from friendly nations with maritime security training.
The ICG received Government approval to setup its own academy in 2009, to be located in the southern Indian state of Kerala; partly due to the existing presence of the Indian Naval Academy (INA), located at Ezhimala. However, the necessary environment and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearances could not be obtained thus delaying the project and necessitating the move of the academy to the neighbouring state of Karnataka.
At present all ICG officers undergo 22 weeks of training at the INA.
