GIAD-App

Women in Aviation International (WAI)’s 6th Annual Girls in Aviation Day (GIAD) was celebrated virtually with the launch of the new Aviation for Girls App, sponsored by the U.S. Air Force. Within the first week, this free, year-round experience for girls ages 8-17 has already connected thousands of participants in 55 countries.

“Our goal in delivering a virtual experience for this year’s Girls in Aviation Day was to extend our reach and inspire girls-no matter where they live or learn,” says WAI CEO Allison McKay. “Last year, our in-person events reached girls in 18 countries. This year, the app has already tripled our reach and connected with girls all around the world, providing them with access to hours of inspiring content to expand their knowledge about all the opportunities in aviation and aerospace.”

For a report on how the airline training community is innovating during the pandemic, read  Remote Possibilities.

The thousands of participants in 55 countries include Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Guam, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Kosovo, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, US Virgin Islands, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and Zambia.

Available to all interested in aviation/aerospace and STEM, the AFG App is the tool WAI is utilizing to deliver valuable content and resources including career videos, virtual museum tours, scholarship information, hands-on activities, book readings in multiple languages, as well as digital issues of Aviation for Girls magazine. And despite the name, girls and boys are both welcome to participate.

WAI encourages participants to enroll by October 31, 2020, and access these digital resources through the AFG App. Social media challenges and prizes will continue this month, and the winners of the seven contests will be announced by November 1.
