The NATO Modelling and Simulation Group will hold its 17th workshop on "Commercial Technologies and Games for Use in NATO and Nations" online on 7 October 2021. MSG‑192 will be hosted by the 2021 CA2X2 (Computer Aided Analysis, Exercise, Experimentation) Forum.

The commercial sector is developing key technologies and applications that can also be used in defence applications. NATO's M&S community wants to identify the technologies that have the greatest near-term potential and understand the trends and developments that will best meet future defence requirements. The workshop will serve to share national experiences, explore commercial technologies and games, understand best practices and identify barriers to further use and ways to overcome them. This workshop will also help to formulate a technology roadmap for possible future activities of the NMSG Task Group on Commercial Technologies and Games. Technical and application briefings and demonstrations of selected commercial technologies will help participants to better understand the issues so that they can contribute to the development of the strategy for NATO and nations to use these technologies.

The focus of the workshop will be:

  • Artificial Intelligence in simulation applications
  • Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality developments (such as Microsoft HoloLens)
  • Game Architectures (STE, SpatialOS) and Game Engines (Unity)
  • M&S as a service architectures and applications
  • Cyber Awareness games and Cyber Effect simulations

Aspects to be discussed include affordability of simulations and digital games, interoperability issues, and the potential impact of these technologies on learning, teaching and decision-making.

The event is open to NATO nations, NATO Bodies, Science and Technology Organization Enhanced Opportunity Partners (STO EOP), Partnership for Peace countries (PfP) and Partners across the Globe (GP). Participation in the workshop is free.

Authors are invited to submit brief abstracts on the topics listed or on national initiatives or activities by 25 June 2021. Registration for the workshop will close on 30 September 2021.
