Florida Atlantic University (FAU) has received an in-kind grant from the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, in the form of a T-1A Jayhawk Mixed Reality flight simulator valued at around $4.5 million. The simulator replicates the cockpit and flight characteristics of the twin-engine jet used in U.S. Air Force pilot training.
The system combines physical cockpit controls with immersive digital environments, allowing researchers to run repeatable, high-risk scenarios that would be unsafe or too costly in a real aircraft. Its open-source software architecture lets investigators modify flight models and test AI and autonomy frameworks in real time.
Beyond aviation, the platform supports research across neuroscience, cybersecurity, robotics, and human performance. It will be available to FAU's wider research community and industry partners, and is housed at FAU Tech Runway in Boca Raton.
