South Korea's Army has unveiled an upgraded reservist training programme incorporating virtual reality, laser engagement systems, and drone drills, demonstrated recently at the Seocho science-based training centre in Seoul.

The programme replaces traditional flat-screen simulators with three-sided multi-screen VR systems, allowing reservists to rehearse combat scenarios in virtual recreations of real urban locations. Laser-based engagement technology enables realistic urban combat drills without live ammunition, while airborne drones equipped with sensors serve as targets for anti-drone shooting practice.

Medical training is also part of the programme, with ICT-based CPR simulators providing real-time feedback on technique.

Since launching in 2014, the Army has built 29 science-based training centres nationwide and plans to expand to 40 sites. New centres are scheduled to open this year in Mokpo, Daejeon, Chilgok, Yeongcheon and Andong, with future facilities set to cover urban, mountainous and coastal environments.
