In this episode of AI in Action, host Andy Fawkes is joined by Margareta Freitas, Innovation Lead at Thales, and Marty Kauchak, Halldale Group Editor and retired US Naval Captain, to explore how AI is transforming competency-based training (CBT) in civil aviation and other safety-critical sectors.

Throughout the conversation, Margareta explains how CBT shifts the focus from task-based training to developing broader competencies such as decision-making, communication, and situational awareness—essential in complex, high-stakes environments like aviation.

The panel discusses how AI, especially large language models (LLMs), can support training by making data analysis more transparent and human-centric. Rather than replacing instructors, AI is positioned as a support tool that enhances fairness and feedback in training.

Both guests emphasise the importance of targeted data collection. With vast amounts of data available, knowing what to collect and why is critical to making AI effective in training environments.

The conversation touches on how regulators like EASA and the FAA are approaching AI integration, with Europe appearing slightly ahead in both CBT and AI adoption.

By the end of the decade, the guests predict a gradual but uneven adoption of AI-supported CBT across sectors.

Success will depend on collaboration among stakeholders, thoughtful integration of AI tools, and a continued focus on human-centred design.
