UCSF recognized for excellence in nursing

UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco have recently been acknowledged for their excellence in nursing as well as their quality of patient care and innovations in professional nursing practice. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) awarded UCSF the prestigious Magnet Recognition designation, the highest level of recognition they award.

UCSF has met the 98 standards for excellence with no deficiencies while outperforming national benchmarks for indicators that reflect nursing quality (such as falls, pressure ulcers, and patient satisfaction). This distinction is a high honor for UCSF because only around 8% of the 5,500 hospitals registered with the American Hospital Association have achieved this status. UCSF is the only hospital in San Francisco to have this distinction.

Tina Mammone, PhD, RN, CENP, NEA-BC, vice president and chief nursing officer of UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco told UCSF news, “This recognition is a testament to the outstanding and exemplary professional practices of our nurses, nurse leaders and interprofessional colleagues. The Magnet designation not only recognizes UCSF nurses, but all of our staff and providers for their tremendous teamwork and interdisciplinary care.”

Initially, UCSF received the Magnet designation back in 2012 and was then re-evaluated over the past year for the four-year designation. The review consisted of over 3,000 pages of documentation and a four-day onsite visit. During this visit, areas such as leadership, improvements and innovations were evaluated. In order to maintain this achievement, UCSF had to continuously function at the highest standards of nursing care while continually improving hospital processes and outcomes.

Since the launch of the Magnet program back in 1994, hospitals have used strived for this designation to help with nurse recruitment efforts. These designations have also become increasingly important for patients looking for the best care possible. The ANCC has conducted studies that have shown a strong correlation between a nurses work environment and the patient safety climate. The better the work environment means a better patient safety climate and this high correlation leads to increased patient satisfaction, decreased mortality rates and improved quality.

UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals have not only achieved Magnet status but they are also ranked among the top hospitals in the nation.
