Air Methods, a U.S.-based air ambulance provider, has partnered with Hawaii’s Mauna Loa Helicopters to encourage more pilots to join the helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) sector. The partnership began last month with two Mauna Loa pilots attending a multi-day training course in Denver, Colorado.

The program includes classroom instruction, simulator exercises, and practical training in areas such as aeronautical decision-making, instrument flight rules, GPS navigation, and aircraft security. Mauna Loa, which employs 32 instructors, plans to send groups to Air Methods’ courses quarterly.

“Our goal is to help bridge the gap between early-stage flight training and the highly specialized world of air medical services,” said Rob Hamilton, CEO of Air Methods. Benjamin Fouts, Owner of Mauna Loa Helicopters, added that the program provides valuable training and potential career pathways for instructors seeking mission-driven aviation work.
