ROKS Hansando, the first dedicated Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) training ship was commissioned into service on October 20. The new ship will be deployed on operational missions from 2021.
The new training ship features a computer-based training (CBT) system and has four classrooms, with the largest being able to accommodate 200 trainees at the same time. 300 trainees and 120 crew members can be accommodated aboard the vessel.
Prior to the commissioning of ROKS Hansando, the ROKN used its warships for training of crew.
ROKS Hansando will also double up as a hospital ship in times of conflict, with three operating rooms, a medical treatment room and a negative pressure room for treatment of infectious diseases.
Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the HDT-5500 Class training ship which has a tonnage of 4,500 tons, was launched in November 2018. Weapons include a 76mm main gun and a 40mm secondary gun and the training ship can also accommodate a helicopter.
