Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), in partnership with Prairie College, is introducing virtual reality (VR) to enhance pilot training amid a growing global pilot shortage.
The VR program features a Cessna 172 simulator with a flight deck identical to the real aircraft, allowing students to develop real-world skills in a safer, cost-effective environment. Cold winters and limited aircraft availability often restrict in-air training, but the new simulator can replicate realistic scenarios year-round.
Training instructors can pause and replay scenarios in the simulator, making it easier to address errors and reinforce proper procedures. The technology also reduces fuel use and aircraft wear.
The initiative is part of a Transport Canada pilot project exploring VR's role in aviation education.
Beyond training, MAF aims to mentor young pilots while preparing them to serve isolated communities through aviation rooted in Christian mission work.
