China's PLA Air Force has introduced virtual simulation platforms for its J-20, J-16 and J-10C fighter jets, allowing ground-based pilots to control virtual aircraft that join real pilots in the air during training exercises. Media reported that the system links virtual and real forces, supporting joint training across the three aircraft types.
A Chinese military affairs expert said the approach lowers training costs by reducing fuel use and equipment wear, improves safety by letting pilots rehearse dangerous scenarios without real risk, and helps new pilots build experience faster given limited aircraft availability. The system also generates flight data that could support development of future AI-driven pilots.
