Cadets in Ukraine’s basic combined arms training program (BZVP) are now using virtual reality to simulate the experience of combat. In a training video called The First Battle, recruits are placed inside a trench during a firefight, viewing the action from the perspective of a soldier. The video uses real actors instead of avatars, adding realism that blurs the line between simulation and reality.
An instructor named Yevhen told LIGA.net that the immersive format helps cadets begin to understand the intensity of combat. While some respond as if they’re watching a film, others are deeply affected—realizing they could be on the front line within weeks.
After the VR introduction, cadets move into practical exercises to develop essential skills. Instructors say the training changes most recruits, helping them grasp the gravity of military service. The approach is part of Ukraine’s effort to modernize training and better prepare soldiers for real-world operations.
