U.S. and Swedish military personnel conducted bilateral combat search and rescue (CSAR) training in northern Sweden from March 30 to June 14, 2025. The exercise involved the U.S. Air Force’s 57th Rescue Squadron from Aviano Air Base, Italy, and Swedish air force rangers from the 17th Wing in Ronneby. Originally part of the Arctic Challenge Exercise, the effort became a focused mission in a strategically significant area near the Arctic Circle.
Personnel carried out simulated downed-pilot recovery missions, using live scenarios to refine tactics in counter-UAS operations, infiltration methods, and recovery procedures. The Swedish terrain—marked by swamps, hills, and forests—presented logistical challenges for both air and ground teams.
The training helped U.S. forces adapt to northern European environments and enhanced interoperability with Swedish counterparts. Officials from both countries emphasized the value of the partnership and the strategic importance of building readiness in the region.
