MIT CSAIL and the Toyota Research Institute have developed a generative AI system that creates realistic 3D virtual environments for robot training. The “steerable scene generation” tool produces spaces like kitchens, living rooms, and restaurants, allowing robots to practice interacting with objects in varied, controlled scenarios.
The system guides a diffusion model using Monte Carlo tree search to ensure objects behave realistically and scenes follow physical laws. Reinforcement learning refines scenarios over time, producing diverse, task-specific environments. Users can also prompt the system to generate particular object arrangements, with high accuracy.
The approach provides scalable, reusable training grounds, and future plans include adding interactive objects and integrating real-world data for richer simulations.
