The Brighton Police Department in New York has introduced virtual reality (VR) technology into its officer training program, supported by a New York State Law Enforcement Technology Grant. The new system enables officers to train in fully immersive and customizable environments without leaving the station.
Using VR headsets, instructors can simulate a wide range of situations by adjusting elements such as bystanders, suspects, and objects. This allows for realistic scenario-based training without the need for live actors, physical props, or restricted public spaces.
The system allows officers to review their performance immediately, replay scenarios, and refine their responses. The department plans to integrate VR into its annual training for all officers and use it to recreate specific real-life events when needed.
