Keele University has introduced virtual reality (VR) cadaveric training to support ENT surgical education. Led by Professor Ajith George and developed in partnership with ExR Education, the immersive training program covers transoral dissection and key anatomical structures, such as tonsil vessels and the lingual artery.
The VR simulations walk users through each step of a dissection, helping trainees better understand critical muscular and vascular landmarks in the parapharyngeal space.
A study led by ENT Specialist Trainee Michael Eastwood at the University of North Midlands evaluated the training’s impact, revealing a significant improvement in post-teaching assessment scores, with average results increasing from 60% to 90%.
Launched during a training day in January 2025, the initiative was funded by the university hospital’s charity. The four ENT training modules are now freely available to NHS professionals via ExR Education’s platform.
