A team from the University of Georgia has developed a virtual reality program called VR Co-Lab to help train workers in the recycling industry to collaborate more effectively with robots. As robots become increasingly involved in disassembly tasks—essential for recovering parts and materials from electronics—training human workers poses a challenge.
VR Co-Lab simulates a real-world environment, allowing users to safely practice tasks such as disassembling a hard disk alongside a robot. Using Meta Quest Pro headsets, the system tracks upper body movements to coordinate actions between human and machine, while also alerting users to potential safety hazards.
The immersive training reduces the need for lengthy manuals and minimizes risk of injury. Researchers plan to expand testing of the system, which they say could address labor shortages and improve efficiency in complex recycling workflows.
