East Midlands Ambulance Service has become the first in the UK to use virtual reality headsets to train staff for major emergencies. Two new platforms, REACT-XR and REACT-TTX, offer immersive training scenarios and group-based exercises that simulate incidents involving multiple casualties in environments like cinemas or workplaces.

The virtual reality system allows paramedics to practice life-saving interventions in a controlled, realistic setting without relying on physical mannequins or large venues. Apprentice and student paramedics noted the benefits of the realistic, sensory-rich training, which enhances decision-making and confidence.

Crews also participate in team-based discussions to reinforce collaboration and problem-solving. The initiative is designed to improve clinical skills, standardize emergency responses, and increase preparedness for real-life crises.

The program was made possible through funding and support from the Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response team, and East Midlands Ambulance Service plans to expand training scenarios and explore joint training with other emergency services.
