Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is trialing virtual reality (VR) headsets with long-stay patients, offering immersive visits to familiar local sites like Dean Forest Railway and Puzzlewood. The aim is to support wellbeing by reconnecting patients with meaningful locations, while also exploring VR’s broader applications in healthcare training.
The idea originated from the patient experience team and has received strong emotional responses, including smiles and tears. According to Immersive Learning Technology Officer Stephen Lewis, the project emphasizes community connections, with staff voluntarily filming 360-degree content during their own time.
As the technology becomes more accessible, the Trust believes it could enhance clinical outcomes and familiarize healthcare staff with VR, paving the way for its integration into training.
