one-G simulation launches Torrance 44 Augmented Training Platform

one-G simulation’s Torrance 44 Augmented Training Platform (ATP) is now in production and available for order.

The Torrance 44 ATP is a training device based on the Robinson 44 helicopter which merges virtual reality (VR) technology with flight simulation to create an augmented reality flight deck.

It includes 360-degree visuals as well as a 1G-Wave aerodynamic haptic feedback system provided by an HTC Vive head mounted display to provide increased pilot situational awareness and visual references. The company says these VR features solve the issue of limited visual reference, which is problematic for other helicopter training devices.

Since debuting the Torrance 44 prototype at the 2017 EAA AirVenture Oshkosh event, one-G simulation has worked to fine tune the production model utilising expert feedback from more than 50 seasoned helicopter pilots and flight instructors.

one-G simulation’s VP, Dave Rider, commented, “This device is designed specifically to provide a highly immersive training platform for both primary rotorcraft and transitioning rotorcraft student pilots learning how to hover, manoeuvre and perform many of the emergency procedures needed to safely operate a helicopter.”

Product development, fabrication and assembly – including the avionics and associated software applications – are handled in-house at the one-G simulation HQ in Ballard, Seattle. The company predicts its Torrance 44 advanced aviation training device (AATD) will be available during the third quarter of 2018.
