Halifax Community College will offer emergency medical training

Halifax Community College (HCC) is giving those in the emergency industry the chance to take

their skills to the next level with the introduction of their new emergency management course. The community college is partnering with the Halifax County School District as well as Edgecombe, Nash, and Roanoke-Chowan community colleges.

Michael Elam, HCC's President, believes the course will act as an incentive and opportunity for high school students as they receive the first level of certifications for an emergency technical career.

“It will be available for anyone who is interested in becoming emergency medical technicians,” Elam said in an article from The Daily Herald. “We are in the partnership with (Halifax County Schools Superintendent Eric Cunningham ) to try to make sure we make a place for our students to be successful, and it fits right in our desire to create stackable credentials for students.”

The implementation of the emergency management course was approved by the college's Board of Trustees and planning has begun since early March. In addition to the Board of Trustees, other supporters of the program included County Fire Marshal, Kieth Duncan, Roanoke Rapids Fire Chief Stacy Coggins and Regional Director of Atlas Medical Transportation, George Brance.

The partnership will not only bring in more students interested in this career but will also bring in viable jobs for future professionals pursuing this career.
