Georgia Piedmont Technical College (GPTC) secured $9.55 million in state funding to develop a simulated training hospital in Covington, Georgia. The project aims to expand healthcare education and double student enrollment in allied health programs, serving Newton County and nearby areas.

The college plans to renovate an existing building to create a hands-on learning environment, training over 270 students annually in fields such as nursing, medical assisting, physical therapy, radiologic technology, and surgical technology.

GPTC leadership emphasized the importance of addressing workforce needs by collaborating with regional stakeholders. Piedmont Newton Hospital CEO Lindsey Petrini and other community leaders highlighted the project’s potential to build a skilled healthcare workforce and strengthen the local community. The new facility is expected to open for the Spring 2028 semester. GPTC is also pursuing additional funding to equip the hospital with advanced medical training technology.
