A computer scientist at the University of Texas at Arlington is developing a portable computer vision system integrating augmented reality for U.S. Air Force aircraft maintenance training, according to the school.

William Beksi, assisted by a $450,000 grant from the Air Force Research Laboratory, aims to enhance aircraft maintenance by replacing the expertise of retiring service members using a compact device with field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) connected to a head-mounted display for 3D part detection and identification.
