A nursing program in North Carolina is using virtual reality (VR) and generative artificial intelligence (AI) to boost students’ confidence and clinical abilities. Through immersive VR simulations enhanced by conversational AI, students experience realistic patient interactions that strengthen communication and time management.

Preparation begins a day before the simulation, with students learning about the virtual patients they will encounter during a one-hour shift in a simulated hospital. In the lab, they prioritize patient care, conduct assessments, and document their approaches in real time. AI is not used to assist with documentation so instructors can evaluate students’ genuine responses.

Program leaders note that these simulations closely mirror real-life clinical experiences, helping students identify and address gaps in their documentation skills while building the confidence needed to transition successfully into clinical settings.
