The government shutdown is exacerbating staffing shortages at FAA facilities, underscoring challenges in recruiting and training air traffic controllers. Essential personnel continue working without pay, while unscheduled absences increase, forcing airports like Hollywood Burbank, Denver, and Newark Liberty to operate under adjusted procedures.

Pilots at affected airports must coordinate takeoffs and landings independently, following small-airport procedures, highlighting the operational impact of reduced staffing. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the pressure controllers face balancing work and personal responsibilities during the shutdown.

The situation also illustrates the long-term need for recruitment and sustained training pipelines. Air traffic control remains a safety-critical mission, and disruptions during shutdowns stress the importance of preparing future controllers to maintain U.S. airspace safely.
