Astrom Training Solutions Inc. has released a new methodology called the GUN Model, aimed at connecting task, competency and Observable Behaviour (OB) grading.

Traditional assessment forms often capture only part of the picture: a task score can show a failed event without explaining the behavioral cause, while a competency score can describe a weakness without preserving the specific task in which it appeared, according to the company.

The GUN Model links four elements: the task, the competency, the relevant Observable Behaviours, and a governed mapping layer that controls which task connects to which competency, which OBs can be selected, and how a result is derived without losing the instructor's original rating.

The model supports two directions of grading. In task-first grading, scores of 3, 4 or 5 are saved directly; scores of 1 or 2 open a step requiring selection of at least one weak Observable Behaviour tied to that task. In competency-first grading, scores of 1, 2 or 5 require selected OBs and at least one attributed task, preventing an unrelated task from being used to justify the score. If only one task qualifies, the system may propose it automatically. Scores 3 and 4 follow the organization's configured evidence policy. The resulting task score is clearly labelled as derived, preserving the distinction between direct and inferred evidence.

Normalized mapping weights can aggregate eligible observations into a target score, but one source rating contributes only once to each target. Selecting several OBs adds diagnostic detail; it never multiplies the influence of a single event. This safeguard preserves analytical depth while preventing double counting.

Astrom says the model is designed to support consistency across instructors, fleets, and training programs, as well as traceability of each score back to its task and evidence, more targeted remediation based on specific Observable Behaviours, and structured data for trend analysis adaptive learning, and reporting.
