The U.S. Navy’s Surface Warfare Engineering School Command (SWESC) in Great Lakes held a ceremony to present Master Training Specialist (MTS) certificates to 12 sailors.

“MTS is the highest-level competency for an instructor; if you are striving to be the best you can at what you do, then this qualification you will need,” said SWESC Great Lakes Command Master Chief Demetric Hairston. “The qualification also opens doors to advancement opportunities, awards and future careers in the training field, in the service and beyond.”

MTS certification includes nomination, completion of Job Qualification Requirements, testing and board evaluation. The course covers educational theory as well as the processes and interworking elements of the Navy training realm, from instructor duties and responsibilities. The rigorous qualification enables Navy instructors to be more invested in their role in the Navy training system.

Gas Turbine System Technician Electrical (GSE) 1st Class Jordan Serck, Hull Maintenance Technician 1st Class Justin Milazzo, Electrician’s Mate (EM) 1st Class Jesus Hernandez, Machinist’s Mate (MM) 1st Class Johnathan Moretz, GSE 1st Class Leonard, EM 1st Class Justin Smith, EM 1st Class Brandi Coyle, GSE 1st Class William Mayes, GSE 2nd Class Justin Varney, GSE 2nd Class Adrianne Deleon, MM 2nd Class Maxwell Caldwell and GSE 2nd Class Jacob Parker earned the MTS qualification by demonstrated excellence in leadership, technical competence, application of instructional methodology and desire to improve fleet readiness through quality instruction.

At SWESC Great Lakes, 52 percent of instructors are MTS qualified. With the encouragement and support of SWESC Great Lakes Commanding Officer Cmdr. Shawn Gibson and Senior Enlisted Leadership, the sailors at the command are exceeding and excelling in their certifications.

“The outstanding sailors who earn their MTS designations today have demonstrated highly effective teaching skills and a comprehensive understanding of school management, training administration, and curriculum management which makes them a valuable resource for both students and the command,” Gibson said. “This is just another example of the professionalism and pride our instructor’s project every day to make sure the students receive the training they need to be successful in the Fleet.”
