The Kentucky Air National Guard conducted Exercise Grindstone to simulate the state’s response to a major earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The scenario began with a simulated 8.0-magnitude quake near Osceola, Arkansas, affecting multiple states including Kentucky. Within hours, the Kentucky Air Guard activated its emergency operations, deploying over 30 personnel and three C-130J aircraft to Paducah.

Airmen parachuted into a damaged regional airport to assess runway conditions and prepare for incoming aid. Specialized fueling operations enabled helicopters to access remote areas. The exercise also included medical evacuations, aerial damage assessments, and interagency coordination with local, state, and federal partners.

Grindstone aimed to test and strengthen Kentucky’s capacity to manage life-sustaining operations during a large-scale disaster, demonstrating the Guard’s commitment to public safety and emergency preparedness across the Commonwealth.
