Volunteer fire departments in San Lorenzo Valley have received a FEMA grant of $269.8K to enhance community fire safety education. Awarded through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the funding supports the purchase of a new Fire Safety Education Trailer and specialized training extinguishers for the Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, Felton, and Zayante Fire Protection Districts.

The updated trailer replaces a 37-year-old unit and includes demonstrations like smoke-filled rooms, heated doors, simulated kitchen fires, and gas shutoffs. It will visit local schools in October to support hands-on fire safety instruction. Since 1999, these fire districts have educated over 1,100 students annually; the new equipment will now serve more than 1,500 students across the valley’s 34,000 residents.
