Theresa McDonnell, DNP, RN, chief nurse executive at Duke University Health System, is leading technology-driven efforts to improve workplace safety and reduce burnout. McDonnell, who also remains a practicing oncology nurse, has overseen the rollout of immersive VR-based safety training and AI-powered staffing tools developed with input from frontline nurses. The VR platform allows nurses to practice conflict de-escalation in simulated high-stress environments, contributing to a reduction in workplace violence incidents.

The AI tools use real-time data to forecast patient demand and recommend staffing adjustments, helping reduce overtime by 23% and improve retention by 18%. McDonnell emphasizes that these tools were co-designed with nurses to ensure practical effectiveness and usability. Her approach, rooted in compassion and collaboration, also seeks to rebuild trust between clinicians and the health system. By focusing on human-centered technology, McDonnell is reshaping nurse leadership, education, and innovation at Duke.
