NHS Fife has conducted a full-day simulation programme to train medical students for emergencies onboard aircraft. The exercise, held at Edinburgh Airport, was developed by Dr Martin Clark, Dr Charlotte Reid, and NHS Fife’s medical education staff.

The training exposed 16 final-year St Andrews and Dundee University students to realistic inflight medical scenarios, aiming to build confidence, clinical reasoning, and situational awareness outside traditional NHS settings. Edinburgh Airport Fire Service provided access to its training rig, while Jet2 supplied an aircraft and cabin crew to support the simulations.

The programme addressed the lack of out-of-hospital emergency training in medical school and aimed to improve students’ confidence in offering assistance during unusual clinical situations.

Edinburgh Airport’s Chief Operations Officer Peter Barnes said the collaboration created practical learning experiences for future doctors.
