Pennsylvania state agencies have introduced a virtual reality driving simulator designed to prepare drivers for the rapid and dangerous conditions of a snow squall. Developed with Pennsylvania road conditions in mind, the simulator places users behind the wheel during a squall, using 360-degree visuals and surround sound to replicate reduced visibility and roadway hazards.
The core message the simulator reinforces is straightforward: take the nearest exit when a squall hits rather than pushing through. Testing with community members revealed that very few participants made that choice, highlighting a gap in driver awareness that the tool aims to close.
Alongside the simulator rollout, PennDOT noted that variable speed limit signs installed along major interstates have contributed to a 7% drop in winter crashes and a 34% reduction in serious injuries and fatalities.
The simulator is available for free on VR headsets and desktop computers.
