NHS Scotland’s Mobile Skills Unit recently visited Shetland, delivering simulation-based training directly to local communities. The unit traveled to Brae, Yell, Unst, Aith, and Lerwick, providing hands-on education for NHS staff, fire crews, coastguard teams, police, and school pupils.
The mobile unit featured high-tech mannequins that simulate patient deterioration, allowing participants to practice clinical decision-making, teamwork, and emergency response procedures. Sessions included resuscitation drills, CPR, AED use, and managing conditions like anaphylaxis.
In addition to healthcare professionals, schoolchildren took part in activities such as calculating NEWS scores, managing collapsed patients, and working through healthcare-themed escape room scenarios that introduced them to NHS careers.
The initiative helped reduce travel needs for training, offering vital learning opportunities across the isles and encouraging interest in healthcare careers among local students.
