Solent University’s Warsash Maritime School supported the launch of Buran, Union Maritime’s first wind-assisted tanker, by delivering what is believed to be the world’s first simulator-based training for vessels equipped with Flettner rotors.

Developed with Wärtsilä and Union Maritime, the training uses a digital twin of Buran that includes Norsepower rotor sails and their control systems. The model was tested through digital sea trials to ensure realistic behavior across operational scenarios.

Now in use at the university’s maritime simulation center, the system allows crews to practice maneuvering, understand rotor effects under varying weather conditions, and maximize propulsion efficiency.

Jonathan Ridley, Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor, said the initiative supports step-by-step progress toward shipping decarbonization. Union Maritime Managing Director Laurent Cadji added that the training ensures officers are prepared to use the technology effectively from the outset as the company builds a more sustainable fleet.
