George Mason University launched a pilot program using virtual reality to train certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in dementia care. Led by Assistant Professor Li-Mei Chen and Professor Megumi Inoue, the initiative aims to deepen caregivers’ empathy by immersing them in patients’ experiences.

Participants wore headsets to simulate the confusion, fear, and memory lapses of dementia, stepping into scenes such as a patient panicking in a familiar but unrecognizable room. The training combined these VR scenarios with online lessons and group discussions.

Adapted in partnership with Japanese company Jolly Good Inc., the VR content featured AI-generated English voiceovers for use in Northern Virginia nursing homes.

Beyond improving patient care, the program addresses high turnover and limited training among CNAs. Chen’s team is analyzing feedback to refine the materials and hopes to expand the training to more facilities.
