A community college in Salisbury has incorporated virtual reality headsets into its nursing program, giving students a way to rehearse clinical decision-making in a controlled environment. Implemented in late 2024, the technology allows learners at different stages of the two-year program to practice everything from basic assessments to fast-paced emergency scenarios.
Faculty members describe the simulations as a valuable bridge between classroom instruction and future clinical rotations, offering a safe space to build confidence and refine critical thinking. Students who recently tried the headsets for the first time said the experience helped them feel more prepared, noting that the virtual setting allows them to make mistakes without putting anyone at risk. Many appreciated having the chance to face realistic patient interactions before working in an actual hospital environment.
