MDC’s Medical Campus opens simulation center

Miami Dade College (MDC) opened its new Center for Learning,Innovation and Simulation, a state-of-the-art facility designed to providestudents with the training needed to excel in today’s fast-changing health careindustry. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place July 16, at the Medical Campusin the heart of Miami’s Health District.

“Health care occupations are expected to grow by 18 percentby 2026,” said Dr. Bryan Stewart, Medical Campus president. “We’re going to beable to offer students the technology and resources they need to fill many ofthe ‘hot’ new jobs.”

Scheduled to serve students in the fall, the five-floor centerwill feature an entire floor dedicated to advanced medical simulation that willfacilitate the practice of working in real-world clinical environments such asoperating and emergency rooms. With the help of innovative technology, studentswill be able to recreate various medical scenarios, helping reduce errors,improve safety and elevate the quality of patient care.

The center contains amenities comparable to any cutting-edgehospital, including 15 high-fidelity patient rooms, a simulated ambulance, ahome health apartment, and 10 examination rooms, to name a few. Students willbe able to utilize a 300-person multi-purpose conference center withstate-of-the-art projectors and recording capability; and a 150-person tieredlecture facility with technology at each seat.

The building will also house fully equipped medical labs fornursing, respiratory care, physician assistant, histology, medical laboratoryscience and other programs, and student collaboration areas. It will alsocontain a large, state-of-the-art physical therapy facility.

The center will allow for the expansion of some of the college’smost in-demand programs – including emergency medical services, nuclearmedicine technology, nursing and physician assistant – as well as make room fornew programs like central sterile processing and surgical technology.
