U.K. Ministry of Defence secure the future of RAF Valley

Through a £20 million contract, the U.K. Ministry of Defence is extending the life of the Royal Air Force Valley by 25 years.

“This famous runway has been an integral part of the careers of generations of fast-jet pilots who have seen action across the world and are currently leading RAF strikes against Daesh,” said Defence Secretary Michael Fallon.

The station and its newly restored runway was used for fast-jet training for pilots, and is now able to support training for aircrafts like the tornado and typhoon. Other additions made include new section of airside perimeter road, new visual aids, aeronautical lighting and signage for the air station.

It also serves as a home for helicopter training for pilots and aircrews in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.

“I’m delighted that this investment will see the runway play that vital role for at least another 25 years, training new pilots in the skills they need to help keep us safe when flying the next generation of aircraft,” said Fallon.

RAF Valley’s hanger was also refurbished. It will house three new Airbus Jupiter helicopters to train pilots across services, delivered as part of the U.K. Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS). These recreate the cockpits of front-line aircrafts. This refurbishment is part of an £80 million investment at RAF Valley and RAF Shawbury.

“Our team of military personnel, Civil Servants and industry partners take great pride in their role of training the next generation of fighter pilots for the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy,” said RAF Valley Station Commander Group Captain Nick Tucker-Lowe. “With our refurbished main runway, we are well prepared for the future.”

All new U.K. pilots will pass through RAF Valley before they reach their frontline squadron.
