The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stratton departed Kagoshima on June 20 after completing joint engagements with the Japan and Philippine Coast Guards. This mission included the first trilateral search and rescue exercise with the Philippine Coast Guard conducted outside Philippine waters, underscoring enhanced regional cooperation.
While in port, Stratton leadership met with local Japanese officials and hosted reciprocal tours with partner coast guards. At sea, Stratton, JCG vessel Asanagi, and PCG vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua carried out a complex search-and-rescue exercise in Kagoshima Bay.
The drill featured simulated man overboard recovery using Stratton’s ScanEagle system and a JCG helicopter deploying a rescue swimmer. The exercise concluded with a joint firefighting drill, demonstrating the three nations’ ability to respond collaboratively to maritime emergencies and strengthen readiness in the Indo-Pacific region.
