Design Interactive was recently awarded the Navy Accelerated Technology Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) for the Refinement and Extension of Mixed Reality Adaptive Scaffolding Tool for Enhancing Readiness (RE-MASTER). This award falls under a new Navy SBIR program which focuses on providing rapid development and transition of critical technologies. Built off DI’s AUGMENTOR system, RE-MASTER includes a pedagogical model specific to extended Reality (virtual, augmented, and mixed reality) to target sailor training across a range of proficiency levels, resulting in subject matter expert knowledge capture and development of augmented reality job performance aids (JPAs) to fill critical skills and knowledge gaps. A critical component of REMASTER is the EXTRACT system.
EXTRACT was designed to methodically elicit knowledge from subject matter experts so they can create effective and skill level appropriate AR job performance aids and training content. RE-MASTER will be utilized across a range of use cases aboard the USS Gerald Ford, (CVN 78) to meet critical challenges with ship operations and maintenance. This solution has robust support from around the Navy community including transition support from NavSea/PEO Carriers.
An independent third party review of the resulting training content produced by the EXTRACT system was conducted by the Naval Education Training Command and the Center for Naval Analysis with high regard. The collective support from CVN 78, NavSea/PEO Carriers, NETC, and ONR has led to a Fleet-centric design ready for adoption. Beyond use on ship, RE-MASTER will include integration with the Navy’s Carrier-Advanced Reconfigurable Training System (C-ARTS) Program to demonstrate a “ship-to-pier-to-ship” learning capability, thereby enhancing enterprise readiness and supporting the warfighter.
