The Russian military recently concluded an exercise with air defence units from its Central Military District training to defend ground targets against Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) strikes.
The exercise which was conducted at a Russian military training ground in the Chelyabinsk region and involved the use of Electronic Warfare (EW), radio intelligence and aerosol countermeasures against UAV targets.
According to a release issued by Russia’s Ministry of Defence, the exercise witnessed participation from EW suppression stations Pole 21, Zhitel, Svet-KU, TDA-3 thermo-smoke machines, Podlet-K1 and Niobium radar stations, in addition to Tor-М1, Pantsir-S air defence systems.
Over the course of the exercises, Russian military personnel ascertained the control frequencies of UAVs preparing for take-off and passed on the information to command posts.
Russian Tachyon and Orlan 10 UAVs imitated opposing force targets operating at low and extremely low altitudes during the exercise. Once detected, Tor-M1 and Pantsir-S air defence systems engaged the targets at distances of up to 12 km altitude and at heights ranging from 350 m to 3,000 m.
